This artwork is my take on the 1975 performance of the same title by Marina Abramovic. It is part of my creative research process about self-care and self-representation techniques used by women in reaction to the capitalist patriarchal system. By the transgression of codes and subversion of materials linked to the advertisement and cosmetic worlds, I try to make sense out of beauty rituals and their impact on mental health. In this case, my goal was to explore hair removal as a mandatory painful gesture, leading to conformity and normalization of beauty. What is the acceptable level of pain, of violence to reach an ideal? Where do we draw the line between self-care and self-destruction? I am also interested in the effect of the repetitive gesture on mental health. Is the goal of this mandatory ritual really well-being?
